One of the most treasured and popular hadith (sayings or actions of Prophet Muhammad, sallalahi wa layhi wa salam, peace and blessings be upon him) as reported by Bukhari and Muslim is

A man came to the Prophet and said, ‘O Messenger of God! Who among the people is the most worthy of my good companionship? The Prophet said: Your mother. The man said, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man further asked, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your mother. The man asked again, ‘Then who?’ The Prophet said: Then your father. (Bukhari, Muslim)

And, one of the best nasheeds (Islamic songs) that is written that centers on this hadith is “My Mother” mistakenly known to be by Yusuf Islam, but it is written by Rashid A. Bhikha & sung by the Children in the “I look, I see” CD by Yusuf Islam, Friends & Children.

Since we searched high and low for royalty-free nasheeds or Islamic tunes, and could not find them readily available, we just gave it a whirl and said why not have my girls sing? There are 3 stanzas and 3 girls, and they all the chorus…so without further ado; here are my girls honoring all mothers.

Non-Muslims Can Totally Relate

When I shared with my colleague, that the reasons Mothers are 3-times honored over the Father, is because We (1) Bear Them, (2) Give Birth to Them, and (3) We Raise Them.

After listening to my girls sing, she let me know that the tune was in her head all day and that she was actually singing it while shoveling this driveway!

Allahu Alam, or Allah Knows (best). After experiencing computer troubles, a mix of ice and snow storms, tons of exciting opportunities facing American Muslim Mom’s rebranding–let’s just say, it’s been a crazy week. Mix in my missing hubby during his business travels, trying hard to keep up to my girls’ extremely high-level level of inquiry, and balancing my daughter duties for daddy (I was told the 2nd year after a spouse’s lose is the hardest…well they were right!). Truth is, I’m experiencing health issues yet again; and I’m trying to stay balanced, aware, and preparing for the inevitable challenges ahead of me.

Ever since we returned from overseas, I knew we’d be facing some big changes; but I’d didn’t expect them to be this exciting, rewarding, humbling–mashaAllah, but Allah Knew. My family, dear friends and colleagues, know I have a habit of exhausting myself from my own excitement–and that I work hard at what I love…and, if I know others gain from my efforts; I work even harder. But, I vowed to always work wisely and not just hard. So, balance is critical for me right now.

So, when I came across Zain Bhika & Dawud Wharnsby’s video below, I was mesmerized by every word and caught here crying, saying thank you Allah!

I am so grateful that we have 5 daily prayers that guides my days, because it helps me to stay focused on what’s most important–my staying steadfast to gain Allah’s approval and His alone; especially during the toughest of times. I’ve caught myself praying so much more this week though too, istikhara (prayer for guidance for a particular question) and qiyam al-layl (extra night prayers, particularly in the second-half of the night).

Subhanallah, with every prayer I came up with new solutions and renewed energy to face the next big decision, or regain physical energy–period.

As you may know, the closer to run to Allah, He’s there faster and closer than your own  attempt. So, inshaAllah, may you find peace today remembering that Allah Knows All.

Remember, that Allah is testing us during our difficulties, trials, illnesses and sickness. The ones who seek His guidance and stays on His straight path will be rewarded, inshaAllah. So, do not let your difficulties turn you away from Allah. And, Remember: He Tests Those He Loves Most too!

Embrace yourselves mommies, because this is video *always* makes me cry…so, it’ll at least make you teary-eyed. My girls often remind me to watch this video every now and then– because we often reflect on how … mashaAllah, so we always remember how many blessings we have.

A is for Allah by Yusuf Islam is a great nasheed (Islamic song) because it goes through every letter in the Arabic alphabet with an Arabic word that is common to all Muslims even though Arabic may not be their first language. We particularly like this video because they show the art of Arabic calligraphy. It is craft that is absolutely beautiful, and this talented elder makes it look so easy as he effortlessly makes strokes of our beloved prophets (peace be upon them all).

The repetitive harmonious calling of the Shahada (declaration of faith, the first pillar in Islam) in this simple nasheed (Islamic song) is so beautiful, calming, uplifting, and peaceful that it brought tears to my eyes. The video is okay, but the nasheed is something worth streaming through your house over and over again.

A funny video shares a couple well-known ahadith about how we must treat our mothers:

1. The Prophet Muhammad said, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him: Your Heaven lies under the feet of your mother (Ahmad, Nasai).

Role of Parents in the Qu’ran

While the above ahadith are about mothers, below are a couple verses in the Qur’an about parents

Qur’an
And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him. And that you be dutiful to your parents. If one of them or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of disrespect, nor shout at them but address them in terms of honour.
(Surah Al-Isra, Chapter #17, Verse #23)

And We have enjoined on man (to be dutiful and good) to his parents. His mother bore him in weakness and hardship upon weakness and hardship, and his weaning is in two years – give thanks to Me and to your parents. Unto Me is the final destination.
(Surah Luqman, Chapter #31, Verse #14)

The popular Muhammad Nabeena nasheed which is played in shops in Makkah and Madina plays in our home and the girls’ cell phones throughout most of our blessed days. I believe all Muslim kids should embrace and memorize this beautiful nasheed. Alhumdulilah, this brother took pictures from Umrah and Hajj, made a gorgeous slideshow with English translation. In the right info. bar at youtube, he even writes the transliteration of the Arabic of the full nasheed.
