Review & Giveaway Contest: Saffron Road Coupons ($50 Value) 5 Winners!
When asked how to incorporate Saffron Road’s new phyllos into our iftar, I did have to think with the girls…shrimp dinner? Nay…chicken…not the way I cook things. So, our classic, delicious broiled lamb shank dinner sounded ideal!
Obviously their professional picture is much nicer than mine. I’ve never been one for photography–though I have the biggest passion for it…”good pictures” that is, and the desire to “attempt to capture special memories.”
Anyways, following the tips shared in nutritious iftar meals, we had our soup (onion soup), salad, water and dates (tumar) to break our fast. We used two boxes of phyllos–the vegetables and the spinach–both with 20 in a box. For a family of five, we thought it may be a bit too much, but surprisingly we had all our meals with no left overs. Now, we LOVE hot samosas, so we knew we’d be in for a treat since the thermomoter on the box rated both boxes as mild.
It was unanimous, we all liked spinach better. Even hubby who said, “Since when do I eat spinach?” as we put both on his plate. When we turned our heads, all the phyllos were gone! As picky as he is, we were pleasantly surprised.I admit, I do want to learn how to make the meat, hot samosas one day…and in talking to my girlfriend last night, we laughed at the thought “What mom makes hors d’œuvres for dinner anyways?” My answer, “Well, I do now.”
Stay posted as we review other Saffron Road appetizers over the upcoming months. We picked up some chicken tenders and are thinking of having them for suhoor one day. Though it’s a typical lunch meal, we thought, “Hey, why not?”Travel the journey with us as we add more Saffron Road to our halal kitchen! NOTE: Saffron Road’s new appetizers are only available at Whole Foods, although their entries are available at other speciality and grocery stores.

Assalamu alaykum. I have read about saffron road products on the internet over the last few months. However, I haven’t had the chance to try them. In the pictures, and by your description, I am sure my family will certainly enjoy them! My oldest daughter just started fasting this year, even though she is still very young. So to encourage her and show my appreciation of her faith and strength, I try to make a special treat for her on the days that she does fast, along with dates and fruits. I have been making the traditional samosas, but they don’t seem so special anymore. I am sure that she, and our whole family, will be excited to try these phyllo style appetizers for iftar!

Wa-alaykum asalam. MashaAllah, how old is your daughter? I remember vividly the first year each daughter started fasting, its that memorable, subhan Allah.
Did you check out the 99 Tips to Helping Your Kids Fast During Ramadan that I wrote with my girls last year?
Wow! I definitely need a traditional spicy samosa recipe! Can you share? As for new appetizer flavors to try, Saffron Road definitely has a bunch of options to offer you!

Masha Allah, my oldest is 8 years old. She was able to keep about 14 fasts this year. The days she did not fast, she fasted for half a day- eating breakfast and lunch, then fasting from noon onwards, so she would be hungry enough to enjoy iftar with us.
I just saw the 99 tips you posted. Masha allah- it is so extensive! Some really great tips. I have bookmarked it, and will be sure to use it next year- going through it with her and my husband.
As far as the samosa recipe, it’s really quite simple, just very time consuming. I just cook the ground meat with caramelized onions, and add ginger garlic paste, salt, turmeric, and chili powder, and chopped coriander. Then you just prepare a basic dough with all purpose flour, water, and salt. Roll it out, cut into squares, add the meat and fold into triangles. Then you fry them. Viola!

Wa-alaykum asalam dear Sara.
Please answer at least one of the questions, which phyllos with what iftar meal, or which phyllos interest you.
And, yes; they’re definitely hassle-free for us busy moms.

InshaAllah, sounds like a fun hand-food meal. My girls always ask me to make a halal version of pigs in a blanket…just haven’t gotten around to it yet.
So, which phyllos do you think would work with this meal? Kind of all of them, huh? But, it really depends if you want veggies or sweets…

As this is my son’s first Ramadan fasting all day for every day, we are at the mercy of a 13 year old’s cravings when it comes to Iftar foods and Suhoor.
We have had leftovers during Suhoor, and breakfast for Iftar this year. I think we would definitely enjoy the vegetable samosa appetizers, as they are always a take home item from the Indian Food Store in town.
Since our family is not only pork-free, but also 75% gluten free, I would definitely include the special treat of having the chicken tenders star front and center as a surprise dish. So many hours have passed trying to create our own gluten free chicken tenders, only to have them not be the same as the restaurant.
It is a blessing to have a quick and easy surprise dish in the wings available when the menu you’ve lovingly prepared all day does not seem appetizing to those who’ve been fasting.

Ramadan Mubarak dear Kristina.
Mubarak to your son. May Allah accept his fast. Ameen!
VERY interesting point about the chicken tenders. Subhan Allah, with each passing day our stomachs shrink more and more, so what used to be big suhoors, then iftar-leftover-suhoors, we’re bearing fitting in fruits and dates; so chicken tenders seemed WAY TOO much for suhoor for us to taste yet.
However, its snuggled in our freezer for a soon to be perfect kid’s lunch, insha Allah.

I agree. Chicken tenders for lunchboxes would be a complete score.
I can’t wait to try them in the next few weeks.

Wa-alaykum asalam.
Thanks for letting me know. I was curious why it’s so quiet over here–but, given half our traffic is from 123 other countries besides USA, it should’ve figured…
Insha Allah khair. BTW, do you have Whole Foods up there?

Asallama Alaikum sister, it isn’t that I’m not interested, but as I’m living in Tunisia I guess I don’t qualify for any of your contests
Thank you for your website.

Wa-alaykum asalam sister Melanie,
Thanks for the comment. No, we have international contests too; more infoproducts or downloadable software not products that need to be mailed out. However, we have sponsors in the UK, Australia, Germany, Austria.
So, just by you commenting we found out we need some Tunisian sponsors now, insha Allah Ta’ala!

Incorporating Saffron Road’s phyllos would probably be the easiest aspect of making iftar. The delicate pastries are light and crisp and the perfect match with a cream split pea soup. I would include long, thin white platters along my iftar platter with the phyllos nicely lined up. Just to add color and interest, I’d sprinkle just a tiny bit of chopped parsley along the tops of the phyllos.

I love samosa but I just can’t seem to make them as good as they taste when someone else has made them and they are a little more time consuming for me. I would always incorporate them into meals as a appetizer or snacks etc.

These make great Baklava and Spanakopita
One for dessert, one for a main course or appetizer!
For another appetizer, I might also make stuffed mushrooms
