Make Ramadan Learning Fun!
Make Islam come alive for your child(ren) this Ramadan by including creative, stimulating, and most of all— FUN learning activities. Ramadan is here and many moms will turn our focus this month toward teaching our children about this blessed month as well as ways we can increase our ibaadah (worship) during it.
When I first started homeschooling, there was little on the internet to be found for teaching Muslim children about Ramadan or their religion, in general. This prompted me to start making my own materials for my kids and from it arose a website dedicated to sharing resources for teaching Muslim children about Ramadan, TJ Ramadan.
Alhamdulillah, today, in addition to my site, you can find many resources for teaching your children about this special month. You’ll find traditional lessons and worksheets, innovative “lapbooks,” crafts, PowerPoint presentations, and more……
Here’s a quick look at some of the wonderful offerings around the net for you to explore to make Ramadan learning FUN!
BULLETIN BOARD IDEAS
Start off by building up excitement for Ramadan learning by creating a Ramadan bulletin board. Decorate with useful bits of information (such as ayaat or ahadith) and your children’s artwork.
Here are a few places to get ideas: TJ Ramadan, Yemen Links
CRAFTS
Just about every kid loves arts and crafts! Pasting, cutting, painting, drawing….. Crafts are an easy way to get the kids to show off what they’ve learned…..
Here are some great spots for Ramadan craft ideas: Umm Abdul Basir’s Blog, TJ Ramadan Crafts Page, and here at American Muslim Mom.
CREATIVE WRITING
Got budding writers? Or trying to create some? Try Ramadan Journals and Ramadan Writing Prompts. You’ll also find a few writing activities such as Ramadan letter writing at TJ Ramadan.
LAPBOOKING
Never heard of lapbooking? Lapbooks, popular among homeschoolers, (and catching on in traditional schooling as well) are “portfolios or collections of mini-books, flaps, and folded display material, that provide interactive space for drawings, stories, graphs, graphics, timelines, diagrams, and written work, from any topic, unit study, or book you choose, gathered, glued, and creatively displayed
in a coloured standard sized cardboard folder, often folded in a “shutter-fold,” that fits in your lap.” (Source: Lapbooking blog )
And lapbooks are gaining popularity around the Muslim educational community as well. Drop by Islamiclapbooking blog for links to sample Ramadan lapbooks.
RAMADAN AROUND THE WORLD
Teach your kids that they are part of a global Muslim community (and geography at the same time) by introducing them to Ramadan observances around the world. Stop by TJ Ramadan’s “Ramadan Around the World” center where you’ll find links to personal accounts of observing Ramadan around the world, Ramadan recipes, lessons plans, printables, and more!
These are just a sampling of the great Ramadan resources you can find online these days, alhamdulillah.
