Do you do your own plumbing repairs or is your plumber on speed dial?

We're #1 - RotoRooterHow do you typically handle your plumbing problems and repairs? Do you have a Handy Hubby like me (mashaAllah, God has willed)? Are you an adventurous Do It Yourself Mom…sometimes (only when Handy Hubby isn’t around) like me? Or, do you have a dependable, affordable, and trustworthy plumber in your speed dial…like I wish I had the one time major problems occurred when Handy Hubby was across the ocean and unreachable!? Can you believe that despite being overseas and the time difference, I just frantically called, emailed, texted, left verbal and text messages and searched the many instant message programs we have just to find out what to do and who to call!?

Are Plumbing Problems *Really* an Emergency?

Truth is, all those multiple methods of trying to reach him took all but a few minutes; and in his “What’s wrong!?” frantic reply as if the girls or I were experiencing another medical emergency, I…oops…said “aaa, we have a flood in the basement…”

As silence overcame us and I recalled the many times that I was rushed to the emergency room while he was away…the silence was so long, I was quickly thinking of any calm rebuttal, like “we can’t just hire any strange man to come into our house with the girls and I alone” (which IS true)…but as the silence continued, I realized that I needed this time to calm myself so I can apologize sincerely enough that he’d accept my huge mistake…so at that moment I was prepared to either have him hang up on me or scream how incredibly wrong I was to put him in this situation.

Subhanallah, Glory be to God, his tiredness caused him to reply calmly “Okay. I’ll make some calls…tell me exactly what you see…” Subhanallah, Glory be to God, Handy Hubby had (as suspected) Handy friends that we all knew, who happily came with his wife to help us out!

Now, in my defense: it was more a reaction-thing and not a desperation-thing to just call Handy Hubby wherever he is to take care of certain home repairs. After all, I really do quite a bit with clogged toilets and tubs, twirly a snake is really not that hard–yet extremely dirty!

But, Lessons Learned: It’s best to make a list of Handy MEN for plumbing services,  heating and cooling, cable and internet etc. New problem…we moved to a new home, city and state, and just by writing this post, I realized we better make a new list Right Now!…Hubby!!!! Okay, I’ll wait until he comes home–it’s NOT an emergency. ;-)

Please share your plumbing stories with us! I’d love to see if anyone else exaggerated a home repair project into an emergency like me?…Sadly to share…this not the only time for me either!
