Life in Gaza: Produce. From Stand to Shelf
Our nephews pick up most of our produce from a typical corner stand. Then they nicely organize the fruits and veggies on shelves in our kitchen.
No Fridge, No Freezer, No Problem.
The average day here in Gaza is around 40 degrees Fahrenheit, so there’s no need to refrigerate our fruits and vegetables. In the evenings, it get down to freezing temperatures as well. We have access to a freezer, but we typically only get foods to eat immediately; so there’s no need for us to have a fridge now during the winter.
Yes, we had a fridge & freezer last year, when we arrived in the summer & fall–but, with eight to 14 hour electricity bans, we had other daily problems with the inconvenience of the melting and rotting of foods. So, I actually prefer not having a fridge now–it’s MUCH cleaner & a lot less work, SubhanAllah.
SubhanAllah, produce is eaten rather quickly here too; so we don’t worry about them becoming rotten. We are conscientious when we pick our foods–we want to always eat the ripest foods first. My girls and I are becoming very creative with making juices and drinks if we suspect slight rotting. Or else, we stock up on our vitamins and minerals and enjoy a big mid-day snack. We always have produce for breakfast & big night snacks (which is like a fruit meal).
Living by the Sunnah.
This forces us to truly live by the sunnah of always eating what’s in front of you, and not being wasteful with an overstocked fridge and freezer, which we were accustomed to, living in America. To prevent rotting of produce, I had produce-drawers with individual temperature controls, and I use “never-rot” type bags…and yet our overstocking still caused rotting. May Allah forgive us for this waste. Ameen.
So, we’re grateful for this lesson of simply bringing ripe produce from the stand directly to our shelves now in Gaza.
I’m curious, how you prevent produce from becoming rotten with a fridge? Do you overstock your fridge with produce simply because buying bulk is cheaper? Have you ever lived without a fridge or freezer? If so, please share your stories below.
