I am so happy to share with you this detailed and necessary post because prevention is the key to better health and wellness, and our backs our often neglected. If you’re anything like me, my intention is always to just be on the computer, laptop, or netbook “just for a minute”…which is never the case! Then, I try to compensate by body position only because I’m going to be on for “a couple more minutes”. Fortunately, we’re setting new habits and establishing certain times for “computer” work, so I know I’m sitting comfortably for a designated period of time.

Selecting the Right Ergonomic Chair

Searching for the perfect office chair can be a daunting task with all the available options on the market. However, there are some features that should be searched for when choosing a chair. Most of these characteristics should be noted to select a proper ergonomic chair that will be comfortable and easy on your back. When choosing a ergonomic chair, some aspects that should be considered are:

- Lumbar support

- Height adjustment

- Comfort

- Hip room

- Armrests

Lumbar support is typically the most important feature on a chair. If you are sitting on a chair for long periods of time, lumbar support is very important. This is especially true for your lower back health.

It is wise to make sure that the chair can be adjusted to the appropriate height. Some users may need to find one that fits their body type, especially if they are taller or shorter than average.

Comfort should be the top priority when choosing an ergonomic chair. The seat pan should feel comfortable and be able to hold its shape after an hour or over an extended period of time. Low-density foams, found on cheaper chairs, will not retain their shape and may become deformed after extensive use.

When purchasing a chair, users should make sure that the seat pan can accommodate your hips with ease. A good ergonomic chair will be the right size for your hips and not cause users to sit too far forward.

Armrests should also be checked out to make sure that they can be adjusted. They should also be cushioned, contoured, and broad enough to support your arms’ weight. In addition, users may want to see if the armrests can be moved out of the way completely if necessary.

Other Necessities of a Great Ergonomic Chair

A 5-pedestal base should be included to ensure proper footing and safety. Additionally, a 5-pedestal base allows the chair to easily glide around on carpet or hardwood floors without problems.

All users should also make sure that their chair has a backrest recliner. It is important to be able to move your back during long periods of sitting. This ensures proper back health and gives the privilege of extra comfort.

Another feature that is found on some ergonomic chairs that can be a great benefit to a users posture is an adjustable seat pan. Many seat pans can be tilted forward or backward and can be a great way to correct bad posture. In fact, many of these adjustable seat pans make sitting at a desk easier by allowing users to strengthen their lower back at the same time.

Protect Your Investment

A good ergonomic chair is going to cost users a pretty penny. Remember, you will pay for what you get. Even though a chair may be cheap in the short-term, it may not last for very long and end up costing you more money in the long run.

Any company that stands behind their ergonomic chairs will include a warranty for at least one year and will back up their product. Do not choose a chair that is cheap and does not include a warranty. This may be a mistake in the case that the chair gets worn out or breaks.

Great article, huh? I learned a lot. My girls and I even chuckled at the like-dah ah-hah consideration of the adjustable seat pan for proper hip space. So, what did you learn? Agree or Disagree with these awesome (sorry to be biased) tips?

Each person has his own preferences, even the choosing of chairs. At our house we have different likings on what chair to sit when watching our favorite soap sitcom. Your chair looks so comfy and sturdy on your post, but are they comfortable enough when there is no soft part on it?
