Just based on the Today Show interview, a few things stand out that are not based on the Qur’an and Sunnah, which we feel is pertinent to bring to your attention as unacceptable in Islam:
Dear Brother Wajahat, I pray that you take my below critiques as modest recommendations intended only to please our Creator and Him Alone, as a means to make your play closer to the Qur’an and Sunnah of our beloved Prophet Mushammad (peace & blessings be upon him). They are not meant to criticize. By staying straight in our paths, we will help each other and all our brothers & sisters (those witnessing your written words) reach furdose, the highest heaven. Ameen.
- Hand-shaking between opposite sex is not acceptable. While I have no problem politely declining a handshake with a male, saying “I’m sorry, I don’t shake hands with any men”. Only once in my 10 years did a man asked why. But, a colleague shared a wonderful experience she had with a male Muslim, who said (paraphased), “Since I don’t shake hands with the opposite sex, I’ll shake my hand for you”, and he firmly shaked his own hand; and they both shared a pleasant lasting moment.
- Dancing Women & Music. Now, I know thousands of Muslim American moms and grandmas (foreign and native-born) and don’t know a single one who listens or dances to Tom Jones. Since Muslim women (especially hijabis) should be acting and speaking modestly (which includes not dancing) in front of men; the whole scene can/could be “implied” by having the daughter speaking to her dancing mom, listening to acceptable non-instrumental (without strings) music in the background, unseen by the audience.
- Hijab tight clothes. Acceptable modest hijabi attire does not include form-fitted outfits that shows one’s figure–otherwise it defeats the purpose of “covering or veiling” oneself the true definition on hijab.
These are just a few observations made by the short interview above.
