AFRICA DVD and Vegetable Smoothie

A Healthy Educational Family Fun Night - AFRICA documentary & matching vegetable smoothies - Yummy!

As part of the #BBCEarth campaign, we’re sharing with you today: AFRICA. This documentary became available on DVD and Blu-ray starting  today February 26, 2013. This documentary just finished airing on Discovery Channel (premiered January 8), which was a Discovery Channel/BBC co-production.

Like One Life, this took 4 years to make, featuring 27 countries. The crew used 553 cameras, spent 100 days on horseback and 601 nights in tents, and consumed 6,526 anti-malarial tablets! How exciting, huh!?

Of the 553 cameras used, only 8 were harmed in the making of Africa: 1 chargrilled, 2 eaten (by a lion and an elephant), 2 mini-helicam crashes & 3 drowned! Wow! Can you imagine!?

“Filming firsts” included the first footage of lizards hunting for flies on the backs of sleeping lions, as well as a new hunting behavior in chimpanzees (hunting for honey using 4 different tools).

3-Disc Set

Kalahari is the first section of the first DVD. We’re going to take our time watching this series, as there’s so much to gain one-section which is about an hour (yes, not even one-Disc at a time).

Here are some cool highlights for Kalahari:

  • Using trickery to gain trust, then using them for food, but only in the Winter.
  • Giraffes fighting for the one female, and the green lush land with water.
  • Rhinos surprise night socialization.
  • The fantastic golden “wheel” spider.
  • The hidden cave water, Dragon’s Breathe, and their inhabitants: catfish.
  • Leopard’s mom leaving her 2 sons after 1-year, since it’s hard enough to find food for herself and the two of them their first year…hard lessons to learn.
  • Billion birds’ 5-week cycle to mate and raise babies.
  • Canable beetles uses its blood to spray into the bird’s eyes to protect itself, but when injured its blood attracts its own kind to feed on it even while still alive.

Truly Fascinating Stuff!

Assalamu Alaykoum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatouh Sr Ponn,

What a nice discovery!!! I have more than a reason to want to win this DVD :) . First of all, I am from Africa, and if there is one thing I would love is to share its beauties with my girls.
Furthermore, it took so long to take those pictures that, even if we go there and make a complete Safari, our chances to capture thoses images and unique situations are really low even though I am sure it would be a great experience :D
Finally, how nice would it be to teach my daughter the concept of “Subhane Allah”
    watching this DVD.
The only thing that scares me is that we will probably be requested, as Dad and Mom, to do some animal sounds and imitations… :D
Now, I have to say that this blog has always been a reliable source of information mashaAllah and I trust its reviews (even if all products reviewed are not always affordable…talking for myself ;) )…I will just add about the above review that it says enough to make us curious about this DVD….oh yes, and the 6,526 anti-malaria tablets :|
It goes without saying that I will share this on my FB and with my friends as well inchaAllah.
I am looking forward hearing from you :)
    Salam,
    Kenza

P.S. The picture of the Elephants’ Family is AMAZING Subhane Allah

    As salaamu alaykum!

Greetings of peace to you and yours.

I’d like the DVD format of this documentary if I win.

I want to win this documentary for my family, especially for me because I have been feeling very homesick for the past few months. The last time I visited Nigeria was in 2005. My husband was fortunate to travel last year to take care of his ailing father. Planning travels around this time of the year is ‘painfully’ expensive for a family of six! However, I am very hopeful that when it’s time to visit Africa, specifically Nigeria, Allaah will pave the way for us.

In addition, as a hifdh/homeschooling family, this documentary will add more enriching life skills, lessons, and flavor to our educational style at home. My daughter’s Social Studies text titled, ‘A Child’s History of the World,’ will be sent to us next week and we cannot wait! Definitely, this DVD will spice our Social Studies resources at home.
My family loves to learn about history, geography, and the diverse continents Allaah has created. I am very sure my children will feel in awe when they watch the DVD and see Africa in action, as well as its enchanting beauty. Most of the time, what they see, read, or hear about Africa, are the flaws of the political arena, the poverty-stricken specific African countries, and the injustice that many Africans are doing to one another, which is very unfortunate. I tell my children that there are some people who fear Allaah in the world, irrespective of where they come from, and there are people who do not have the fear of Allaah as well.
Truly, there is so much to learn about a vast, richly blessed continent.

Your family helped me and my family become interested in Africa because we always enjoy any educational posts we read on the American Muslim Mom’s blog. Being Africans, we feel honored that you are encouraging families to watch this DVD.

Knowledge is Power and understanding our world, bridges the wide gap.

    Thank you!

As salaamu alaykum sisters. I would like this video in DVD format if I win.

First and foremost your family is the only reason I know about this movie AFRICA and your reviews on it make it the top movie on my list.

Growing up in a predominantly white school, Africa wasn’t really on the circulum so there’s so much I don’t know about it but want to know. I have always wanted to go to Africa but I just had a baby and of course money is tight and I would want to take him with me. I do plan to go when he gets old enough to understand it all inshallah.

My mother-in-law went to Africa some years back and she loved it there. She brought so many beautiful artifacts back home with her. My husband ad I would enjoy watching this movie with my son over and over as he continues to grow up and pointing out all the wonderful things in Africa to him. I feel as if people are always pointing out the bad that happens in Africa that no body ever points out the good and this movie does that. I want my son growing up knowing there’s good in his “homeland” so to speak. So thank you for reviewing this video and letting us know about it, and congratulations on your daughter’s launch inshallah it will be very successful.

    Thank you for your time.

    Dear Ponn,
Salam upon you and the girls. Thanks for such an awesome giveaway.
I would love to win the DVD version for my family! I am a mom of four, 11, 9, 6 and 2. My kids are fascinated by nature, Wild Kratz rules in our house. My 2 year old has started handling bugs as his personal specimens!
I stumbled across your girls’ blog last year, fascinated by the pineapple cutting demo, the computer genius and helpful advice given by the girls. However, what i was really impressed by was the sheer fun that these homeschoolers were having. Totally inspirational, and with an Islamic backdrop, my dream come true. It took me a couple of months to figure out that there was an accompanying genius mom blog out there, and I have been hooked eversince.
I love the girls’ reviews; honest, detailed, informative with a generous dose of humor. Good luck and God Bless to you and the family. I hope I make it on my African safari!

  5. Ronald Oliver says:

Hello Ponn, I first would like to say thank you for wanting to have and to share the beauty of Africa, by having this amazing giveaway. I sincerely appreciate the opportunity to be able to participate. And if I were to be lucky enough and to be chosen as one of your winners, then the format of choice for me would be Blu-ray. But would be just as happy and grateful to win a DVD set. Thanks for the chance. The reason I would love to be able to win a blu-ray(or DVD)set of this amazing series for my family is because we genuinely appreciate nature and wildlife and truly admire the beauty that God has given us. Africa as a whole, is highly under rated. A lot of people the world over don’t think of Africa as a pleasurable place. Many think of the negatives, like for example, the many people in Africa who are sick and starving, the diseases, the extreme weather, etc. But then this happens all over our planet, not just in Africa. But for me, I like to think of all the beauty in Africa, the people, the animals, their habitat, the beautiful places and scenery. Ponn, thanks to you and your family, for your insightful and informative review of the Africa series. You helped encourage me to want to add this wonderful Africa series to my DVD collection and be able to have many years of enjoyment. :)

  6. Tim says:

Wildlife documentaries are ideal for a family because the whole family will enjoy it. It isn’t like most child-friendly films that the parents agonize through for the sake of the kids.
