Accidental After Shave Discovery: Alcohol
Rushed for time and without any after shave, my husband was scrabbling in the cabinets one day, and I was helping to find some solution to freshen his cheeks…Hey, why not use rubbing alcohol?
We know kids (yes, and the seldom times us mommies and daddies who still get random spots) use alcohol to dab a infrequent pimple. No, I’m not advocating using alcohol as an acne treatment, nor to rub your face to prevent it…but, I’m just sayin’ alcohol is in everyone’s medicine cabinets (typically in our bathroom cabinets)…so, what harm can it really have?
In thinking while blogging, I just ran a quick search if there are any real benefits of rubbing alcohol for acne and here’s an interesting take on the subject, combine alcohol with tea tree oil…oh, we have that too!
So, I digress…
Anyways, back to after shave options, hubby just threw some rubbing alcohol in the palms of his hands and Voila! Quick sting, but the most refreshing feeling he said he ever had! He didn’t rub or scrub with it. He just kind of washed with it, in our typical wuduu style. Once, and that was it!
After just a couple times using this cheap alternative, he says and it was true–his skin was glowing, his beard was unaffected…hey, it’s rubbing alcohol…who wants that near any hair!?
So, here I am thinking we came up with some fantastic alternative to expensive, smelly, probably completely unhealthy after shaves…then, again I ran a quick search, and we’re not that ingenious at all. At least not according to this eHow tutorial “How to Use Rubbing Alcohol for Your Face as an Aftershave.”
From the article,
Aftershave can serve three different purposes: moisturizing the skin, soothing any stinging from microscopic cuts and preventing razor burn. Rubbing alcohol can act as an antiseptic for the skin, cleansing tiny cuts and preventing ingrown hairs.
As for alternatives, one can try witch hazel, peroxide, tea tree oil or any combination of them with rubbing alcohol. One or all these antiseptics are in everyone’s cabinets, so it’s worth a try, right? Oh, and we use only 70% not the 90% isopropyl alcohol. Curious if you have any after shave alternatives that your hubbies enjoy rather than store-bought brands. Please comment below.

Assalamu Alaykoum Ponn,
It’s me again :p. In my country, men use “potassium alum”for its healing properties (it stings a little bit but not as much as alcohol) It is a mineral, and what my hubby does is, basically, take the small alum rock and put it under running water for few seconds and rub his skin, he would repeat that as much as needed. Ladies can also use it as a powder, because it is also known for its anti-perspirant properties subhane allah. At the extend that major european cosmetic compagnies are using it in their products to avoid the aluminium chloride. I am not sure where you can find it here in the US( I brought some with me from my country;) ) but if you do let me know.
Salam
