Women and money statistics
The Budget Central’s Women and Money section states:
“Like success, money is an emotionally volatile issue for most women. It’s probably the most complicated relationship we have—and the one that most controls our lives because we let it.” Sara Ban Breathnach, author, Simple Abundance [Ponn: oh so true.]
The statistics speak:
- Of the “5 Most Expensive Mistakes Women Make” (Sept. 1995, Working Woman Magazine)
#1: Assuming you current financial status is permanent, [Thoughts: not me.]
#2: Paying too much for convenience, [Thoughts: not me.]
#3: Not using a budget, [Thoughts: not me. I use my own, but not a formal written one.]
#4: Waiting for the right time to save, and [Thoughts: not me, we're always in the red, alhumdulilah.]
#5: Fearing the wrong risk. [Thoughts: not me...we learn from failures, so just make and try educated, calculated risks, insha'Allah]
[Thoughts: My problem? Convenience to hand over to hubby...hence, not a priority! I'm surprise this is not in the Top 5...probably it's #6 then.]
- Only 12% of women take responsibility for planning and investment of their money.
Women have 70% chance of being solely responsible for their own financial well being, 80% chance for another person as well. [Thoughts: ah ha!]
- “Budgeting Tips for the New Year” (Winter 1997, Stages Magazine); the #1 Tip is to take a new approach to budgeting. [Thoughts: looking for an approach to investing--period.]
- Women are considered the #1 marketing opportunity of the next decade. Women are making almost all the money-based decisions now. 94% of home furnishings, 92% holiday buying, 91% homes, 89% choice of new bank account, 88% medical insurance. [Thoughts: I know...this is why the time is now to learn and apply!]
Home schooling online
Homeschooling online…what does this mean exactly?
Well, we’re homeschooling on a shoestring budget. So, we’re utlizing the vast, free homeschooling resources online (here on the world wide web)–period.
Again, we’ve been homeschooling our girls since they were born. So, we’ve decorated our house, conducted our travels, and set-up our wireless internet connection among each of our computers (husband’s laptop, my desktop, and the girls’ desktop), based on the ultimate goal to educate our girls ourselves.
Having just posted on the Toledo HELP yahoo group, and talking to my girlfriend, I just realized that we have so many free tips, tools & resources for homeschooling online and specifically girls here in Ohio.
I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to post everything.
So, here’s my advice:
Please ask your questions in the below “Comments” area. Even if your concern does not pertain to that day’s post, just start the dialogue and we’ll do our very best to share our homeschooling resources, tips, views, opinions & recommendations.
When asked, here’s what we consider one of the greatest benefits of homeschooling: is the ability to conveniently give each of our children an individualized private-school education utilizing many free or low-cost hands-on resources (i.e., using natural resources, internet, libraries, etc.) that optimizes all their senses, learning abilities, and personalities and empowers them to be the most loving, compassionate, beautiful, wise, believers of God.
So, while homeschooling is not the easiest thing in the world, remember that the investment in the teaching our children is our investment in the future success of humanity for the sake of God and Him Alone.
May God bless and guide us all!
Toledo Home Education League of Parents
We had a blast on Monday at the Toledo Home Education League of Parents (H.E.L.P.)’s Not-Back-To-School Picnic!
Fox News showed up [we missed the 4pm broadcast
], we took pictures of the 30+ kids who actually stood still for a minute. [ At the busiest time, there had to be at least 50 kids. ]
I proudly recruited 3 new families to become members. I’ve been a member for a year, and it is a great local homeschool organization.
There’s an extremely active Discussion Group [I can never keep up with their numerous posts. And, I subscribe to the "digest". Fortunately, these great parents appreciate me hopping in and out of the discussions as time allows.] .
But, I personally enjoy the monthly newsletter. It is JAM-packed with useful activities, tips, and discussions sent directly to my mailbox at home. All for $15.00 a year! What a bargain!
What I love the most of the parents I’ve meet so far, is that we’re all busy homeschooling parents who have crazy agendas and different schedules. We all fit in the activities that interests our own families, and participate whenever we can. There’s no pressure to do this or that, and we’ve only received warm greetings whenever we do show-up. My girls absolutely love every activity we went to, and I promised to be more active for them.
It’s great to know there’s a resource group to turn to for advice, a place to brainstorm, and have a support system whenever you need them. Join right now! And, please write a note or tell them I referred you!
Home Depot’s Kid’s Workshop

Hurricane Katrina – lessons to learn
Hurricane Katrina is truly a tragic natural disaster! Although are girls are all under 5 years old, there’s many lessons to learn:
1. Geography: We started learning from the Rookie Read-About Geography series just the day before Hurricane Katrina. Great books! Check them out right now!
2. Science. How and where hurricanes form, weather differences between coastal states and where we live in Toledo, Ohio. We used internet search. How New Orleans is below sea-level and what this means.
3. Current Events. I used Yahoo! News and we reviewed the news videos, pictures, and breaking new stories.
4. Charity, Compassion and Humanity. We discussed many issues of the refugees, lotting, and all their basic needs.
5. History. Hurricane Katrina is the worse natural disaster/hurricane in over 40 years.
6. Techonology: The issue of the levy’s and how we need to build an entire city from sewer systems, electricity, etc. from the “bottom-up”. We were on our walk last night and our kindergartener saw the sewer drain and she yelled “Mama, this is what they have to fix in New Orleans, right!?”
7. Reading & Research: We just picked up Children’s Encyclopedias and Dictionaries at the library. We’re learning how to find certain words in alphabetical order.
These are just a few of the lessons learned from Hurricane Katrina. Please offer us more ideas and thoughts by sharing your comments below.
May God bless all the families directly affected by Hurricane Katrina, and may God guide all of us to help those suffering.
Fossil Park. Let’s barter for a piece of your backyard!
Fossil Park in Sylvania, Ohio is less than 3 miles from us, and in the convenience of practically being in our own backyard we were able to travel back 375 million years ago when Northwest Ohio was a great sea teeming with life.
I’m trying to find any good links for you to experience how majorly cool this little-dig has to offer!
Best article I found, with pictures is here at Josh Woodward’s blog .
We were giving the paper work to convert an egg carton to a “Firsthand Fossil Finds” container. We have a bunch of teeny-tiny Moss Animals (Bryzoans). We’d be happy to pick up more for anyone. Write in the comments below, and we can find a way to barter for a piece of your backyard!
